FLOKI Version 2.0

After hearing back about the functionality of our design, we started to rethink our strategy.  We've now divided the letters based on vowels so that it might be a little more intuitive than trying to remember where along the alphabet you are.  Click on our FLOKI Demo link to try the new version.

What's Next for FWEXT?

After repeatedly sending the same text messages to the same person, we realized it's time for a change.  As professors, it's always "I'm running late" or "stuck in an impromptu hallway meeting" (yes, the latter happens a lot in the life of a professor), and these messages are always being sent to the person we're about to meet.  Given the success of Yo!, which only let's you send one message to a lot of different people, we wanted to flip the design. Instead, FWEXT lets you send three different texts to a single contact.  And, all you have to do to text this "special someone" is shaking the phone in one of three different ways.

Right now, it's a little more cumbersome than we want, and is still in the beta phase.  This is simply because you have to hand-type the phone number and open up the app before you can shake the phone.  In the future, we'll be launching a crowdfunding campaign to get enough money to convert this into an app that also runs on Windows phones and iOS. The full version will have access to contacts and run in the background so that once you unlock your phone, all you have to do is shake and send. Further developments will link into your calendar and populate these special messages, saving time on your friends' birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and more!

FLOKI Kickstarter Campaign and Online Demo

Kickstarter

We're in the final stages before the launch of our Kickstarter campaign.

Our goal is to get enough support to make FLOKI an app that will be available for iOS and Android smartwatches.  Here's a link to our draft campaign page on Kickstarter.  Please sign up on Kickstarter to be notified of our official launch date and give us any feedback that you might have on the draft page.  Right now, we're in the process of putting together a longer video for the campaign.  We're making final edits, so if you have any thoughts, please leave your thoughts on our draft Kickstarter page!

Online Demo

A fully functional prototype demo is available on github.io.  Anyone and everyone is free to try this on their smartphone.

NOTE: This page is only functional on mobile touchscreen devices with HTML5 browsers, e.g. Chrome on iOS and Android.

Here's how FLOKI works. Instead of pushing the ‘B’ key to type in ‘b,’ FLOKI breaks up the process into two stages. First, you get to the appropriate button that contains the letter ‘b.’ Next, you swipe to the corresponding button to type the letter ‘b’ in. If you swipe beyond the ‘b’ button, you get a capital ‘B.’ If you swipe into the button, a lowercase ‘b’ will be typed instead. A similar pattern works for special characters. We have developed a unique system for numbers. If you start in the middle of the watch face, the buttons will be replaced with numbers. Swipe beyond the button and the larger number is typed, swipe into the button for the lower number.

FLOKI Speed Competition

To show that FLOKI is functional for a wide variety of people, we are setting a challenge to everyone out there to see who can type a particular phrase the fastest.  Make a video of yourself typing the phrase "FLOKI lets me type fast!" next to a stopwatch and post it to Youtube.  Put the link as a comment on this blog post and we'll put your video up on our FLOKI channel.  We'll have a special blog post  that we'll keep updating to showcase the top three, fastest FLOKI typists! Over time, we'll release different phrases to keep things interesting.

FLOKI: The Next Frontier

As we promised at the end of the year, FLOKI is now a swipe-based system.  Our first design required the user to occasionally have to push two buttons at a time to work the system.  That is now a thing of the past.  Instead, we have introduced a "chain-swiping" system. Here's a video demo of how this works:

From the video, you'll see that an email username and complex password is no problem for this 6-button keyboard.  There are capital letters mixed in with special characters and numbers.  For a standard virtual keyboard, you would have to push the SHIFT key and also switch between multiple keyboards in order to type in the email and password.

The best thing here is that the system is not reliant on "autocomplete" functions that have to guess what you're trying to type in.  A lot of your existing alternative swipe keyboard systems  and apps (such as Swype, Swiftykey, and Minuum) all have to guess what you're trying to type as you move your finger across the keyboard.  With FLOKI Swipe, even with the small space and only 6 "keys," there is no guesswork involved.
